Kate Chaney works with Community Independents to improve Climate Bill (2 August 2022)

The Independent Federal Member for Curtin, Kate Chaney, has worked with the other Community Independents, to propose amendments to the Government’s Climate Change Bill, despite being stuck in Canberra with COVID-19.

“In recent weeks, I have collaborated with the other crossbenchers to ensure that between us, we are proposing a suite of compatible amendments, some of which are no doubt more likely to be accepted than others,” Ms Chaney said.

Ms Chaney has specifically worked on an amendment to ensure the Bill clearly states that its intention is to actually drive climate action and is linked to the science.

This amendment to the Objects clause of the Bill will be relevant in future reviews of the Bill’s efficacy and in any interpretation of the Bill.

“The current draft shows that the Government has already taken into account some feedback provided by me and other crossbenchers.

“The inclusion of an Objects clause that addresses targets, accountability, expert advice and the need for climate action in line with the science makes it clear that this is the beginning of a new era in Australia.

“The Minister for Climate Change, Chris Bowen, has proactively sought input from the crossbench and has been receptive to many amendments.  I have had a number of discussions with the rest of the Community Independents, whose suggested amendments are broadly consistent,” Ms Chaney said.

The Member for Kooyong, Monique Ryan, will move the Chaney amendments in the House after Ms Chaney tested positive for COVID-19.

Ms Chaney said: “Passing this legislation is a symbolic step that will provide some certainty to business that this Government intends to go down the path of decarbonisation, but there is lots more work to do.

“The science shows a target of at least 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 is needed, but I am keen to lock in this progress and continue to work with the Government to pursue the opportunities presented by this necessary shift in our economic activity.”
